It remains a mystery what exactly triggers the autoimmune process that destroys the pancreatic beta cells resulting in diabetes.  Only about 3% of people who carry the genes for type 1 diabetes actually get it.  But in identical twins, if one twin develops diabetes, the other twin also develops diabetes about 70-80% of the time but it may be many years between the ages of onset of diabetes.  Is it a virus, is it several viruses, is it chemicals?  No one knows.  Several years ago scientists thought it was from cows milk, but that turned out to be a dud.  At present about 1 in 500 people have type 1 diabetes.  Why cases seem to &quot;cluster&quot; we just don&#039;t understand.  Obviously this is a very important question.</description>
